This is the first CJ Box book that I did not rate a 5, and I've read them all.After the character Cassie had to deal with the Lizard King, I figured Box had all sorts of threads that could be followed and woven into a great book, but Bitterroots misses the mark, by a long shot.My first impression was this book had been handed off to a female ghost writer, or Box has been exploring his feminine side. I'm totally OK with female authors...I'm a big Dianne Capris fan. But what happened to the strong Cassie? Bitterroots made her out to be a weak, whiney, indecisive, over drinker...not the same woman that did in the Lizard King.Bottom line, this book was a disappointment. I sure hope Box does not wimp out Joe Pickett or Nate Romanaski or Sherridan Pickett....that would be a shame.
In this story the main character is a basically unhappy, judgmental, unpleasant soul. The story seems more about her unhappiness with her life and the people in it than about an actual plot. When you start a story off with a private investigator who doesn't really want to do the job she has been hired to do, and who. before even meeting the person she is investigating, decides he is both guilty and despicable there really isn't going to be an upside. And there was not. I think I will pass on any future "Cassie Dewell" novels.
